Farmer Kev

I forgot to plant a garden again this year. That’s 34 years in a row now. Whoops.
I guess I am good at keeping traditions though. My sister and I live down the road from each other, in order to keep our alliance against any ill- intended neighbors and also so that I can benefit from the garden that she planted. My sister and my future brother-in-law have recreated Mr. McGregor’s garden and it is so awe inspiring. They have Pinterest creations all over the yard. Once I saw hers, I immediately gave up and ordered online from Farmer Kev.
Haven’t heard of Farmer Kev? What have you been living under a rock? I’m just kidding. You probably have your own raised bed garden planted and sprouting as we speak. Now, I love to do mail order anything’s. I love little surprises that come in the mail each month. I have tried Stitch Fix, Thred Up, Fabletics, Blue Apron. Each and everyone one of these brings it’s own box of happiness, but the big issue with all of them, is that they aren’t local. It’s time to support local and Farmer Kev is that. He delivers all over the state, to families who can’t grow a garden, wish they could grow a garden, hate vegetables, love vegetables, hate how their kids won’t eat vegetables, wish their kids would prepare their own vegetables, women who eat like a twelve-year-old boy and are still ordering chicken nuggets at restaurants. He really does not judge. He will deliver to all. I ended up ordering the family summer share. He has a bunch of different options, please click below if you are interested. But this seemed like the best option for the four of us who live here and the vegetables we need to consume, in order to combat the ice cream that we eat every other day.

How Much Does it Cost?
I paid four hundred dollars to get a weekly drop off of veggies from June to September. The amount that I have been spending at Hannaford for veggies that are shipped in from out-of-state has really been putting a dent in the wallet, so I am happy to support a local farm in the wake of this never ending pandemic. Just the other day, my grocery total was $260.00 and I put back three cucumbers, in order to add another bottle of wine, so I really need to do some work on myself.
Anyhow, I have discovered that my drop off day is Friday and that will be consistent throughout the summer. If you have to get out of the house like I do, because your children are little Ozark money laundering animals in the making, no worries at all! Farmer Kev will leave it all there right in your cooler for you. This past Friday I came home from the pool and found a bounty of veggies, so many I could barely find a spot for them. He dropped off a lot of greens, which he emailed me about and I consider that the same as a personalized text message, so already we are fast friends. I got all different varieties of lettuce, a lot of kale, some potatoes, cucumbers, beets, tomatoes and green onions. One of vegetables, I really was not sure what it was. Please don’t judge me. Yes I grew up on a farm, yes my husband works in landscaping. This still did not stop me from texting my best friend and saying what the hell is this and what do I do with it? Apparently swiss chard is great for managing sugar and an anti-inflammatory. Who Knew? I am still in search of recipes to cook this, as I’m assuming it will be a staple in the drop off and I need to adult a little harder. Below is a salad that I made for Father’s Day with the kale that he dropped off. I got so hungry, I ate it all myself before the cookout, but my family has come to expect things like this from me.
So How are the Kids Liking it?
Right away, my kids ate all the cucumbers and tomatoes. I had been in a real self serve mode, due to the virus, so this week when they have been making their own sandwiches, I add a salad to the mix and then I feel like a more involved parent and their dentist can get off my back. I call it a win-win-win. I would recommend Farmer Kev, even for those of you, who have a green thumb and are preparing for the end of the world as we all are. Perhaps you didn’t plant enough of one vegetable, or you like salads every day for lunch, or some random animal eats half your garden. You want to be prepared! This will certainly help. Have a great day and happy crunching.
